This post is in partnership with Tempur-Pedic.
When I moved to Houston over ten years ago, one of the first things we purchased after moving into our first home is a new mattress. We’ve had that mattress since 2007 and for the last couple of years, we’ve both kept saying it was time for a new one, but never pulled the trigger.
Kevin loathed our last mattress, though to be fair, it was well past its prime. Given that you’re supposed to get a new mattress every 8-10 years, we were at least a couple years overdue. I had done a bit of research online about what kind of mattress we should get, polled co-workers and asked every friend which mattress they had – as you might imagine, the suggestions were all over the place. There were so many options – it was kind of overwhelming.
One day during my commute home from work, I listened to an episode of NPR’s How I Built This podcast (one of my faves!) and they happened to have Tempur-Pedic creator Bobby Trussell on as their guest. I had heard of memory foam mattresses before, but never tried one. Months ago, I even ordered an inexpensive memory foam mattress topper from Amazon (a feeble attempt at making our existing mattress more comfortable) and hated it so much, I returned it after one night’s sleep. Needless to say, a few months passed by and we tabled the mattress discussion and just went along with our daily lives.
Then, something serendipitous happened. Tempur-Pedic reached out to me. I couldn’t believe it when I saw the email in my inbox…it was as though the universe was helping push along our decision!
The next day, I was chatting with a co-worker and I mentioned I was going to have the opportunity to try out a Tempur-Pedic – it turns out, she got a Tempur-Pedic years ago and is obsessed. She said it’s so comfortable, that she now has trouble sleeping on other mattresses (at hotels, etc).
I was intrigued. Y’all know I only work with brands whose products I can try and give my honest feedback about – a mattress seemed like a big risk – what if we hated it? However, we did need and want to replace our mattress, so we decided to take the plunge and selected the Tempur-Pedic LuxeAdapt mattress in firm. We picked firm because we both sleep in various positions (stomach, back, side) and firm is said to be best for stomach and back sleeping. I’ve had lower back pain when I wake up for some time now, so I felt a more supportive sleep surface would do me well.
Our mattress and new box springs (Tempur-Pedic recommends you use theirs) arrived and were installed in our bed frame. I remember coming home and feeling excited to sit on the bed and feel the memory foam. As I sat on the mattress for the first time, I was a bit surprised. I don’t know what I was “expecting,” but I was used to a bouncy, springy mattress and this was NOT that. I was a little worried about that first night’s sleep, if I’m being honest. I thought that maybe we should have ordered the soft instead of the firm.
Night one of sleeping on the Tempur-Pedic was…odd. To clarify: it wasn’t bad…it was just so different. If you’ve ever seen the commercials, Tempur-Pedic mattresses are the kind where you can put a wine glass on one part of the bed and jump on another part and it will not move. It’s a totally different experience than any other mattress I’ve ever slept on. I tend to change positions through the night, so I’m sure Kevin appreciates that he doesn’t feel it as much now.
The mattress is made to be supportive of your body, intuitively adapting to your body shape, and has supportive layers that deliver pressure relief as you sleep. The LuxeAdapt line features a more advanced cell structure, for additional comfort, plus a zip-off washable cover that keeps your mattress cool-to-the-touch.
Night two of sleeping on the mattress was good – still a little odd, but I woke up with NO lower back pain. Hmmm…interesting. Brushing it off as a fluke, I didn’t think too much of it. But as each night went by, I noticed I didn’t have that same ache in the morning – probably because my torso/core was more supported when I slept on my stomach.
Kevin and I had daily conversations about the mattress for the first two weeks. How did you sleep? How do you like it? Do you like it better than our old one? Everyday, our responses varied – but one thing we agreed on was that it was very different…but in a good way.
Then, Kevin went to New York City for a business trip and he texted me from his hotel on night two saying “I can’t sleep on this mattress! Our new one is so much better!” Wow, I thought. We were still getting used to/adapting to our Tempur-Pedic, but Kevin’s experience sleeping on another mattress put him solidly in the “Tempur-Pedics are so much better than anything else” camp.
After several weeks went by, I found myself having better and better sleep and waking feeling more rested. No or less lower back pain. It took a few weeks to feel like the mattress was my new normal, but I love it now. A few mornings ago, Kevin woke up and said “I love the new mattress.” Hearing this was like music to my ears because he had complained about our old one constantly (and if you know Kevin is NOT a complainer at all – he is seriously the most laid-back person and is rarely bothered by the kinds of things that can set me into a frenzy, LOL). But our old mattress was his one “thing” that I knew really annoyed him.
I feel really lucky that we got to try the Tempur-Pedic LuxeAdapt – it has been so wonderful for both of us and has really improved our sleep quality. It took some getting used to, but it was so worth the adjustment period to enjoy the comfort we do now.
I can’t compare it to other mattresses on the market, but I do know that Tempur-Pedic is a leader in terms of quality and innovation in their memory foam, and we feel really confident they’re the best of the best.
The kids love our mattress too – even though it’s not bouncy like our old one, they like “sinking” into it.
If you need a new mattress and are seeking a memory foam one – we love our Tempur-Pedic LuxeAdapt – I’d be happy to answer any questions you may have about it! I also want to clarify that the mattress was gifted to us – but I was not required to write a blog post about it. I just wanted to share my thoughts with y’all in case you’re in the market for a mattress and exploring your options!
We are in dire need of a new mattress but I keep putting it off to pay off some debt first. Our mattress is about 12 years old (we are WAY overdue to get a new one) and it’s one of those super thick pieces of garbage that were so popular back them. I have to jump to get in bed (I’m 5’4 with short legs) and making the bed is misery. Just keeping sheets on it is almost impossible because none of them fit, even the ones that claim they fit thick mattresses. I simply cannot wait to get a new mattress, I will happily set fire to our old mattress and dance a victory dance. LOL.
Does it sleep hot?
Not at all! It’s meant to be cooling.
