The Argument for Shapewear: A Review of Jockey’s New Line with Rachel Zoe


As you know from a previous post I wrote on wearing the right bra, I’m pretty passionate about undergarments. This includes shapewear. Yes, shapewear.†Some women view shapewear as “their little secret,” and that’s totally fine with me, but if you’ve never worn it before, I’m about to make the argument for why you should consider it.

 Shapewear can benefit all body types. It can make dresses and skirts skim better on the body and it can smooth out your curves. †I also use slips underneath certain skirts that have a sheer lining (like my navy blue lace skirt from Zara).

 I recently had the opportunity to review pieces I received from Jockey’s new collection†curated†by the lovely Rachel Zoe (who I totally love, like whoa). †I am seriously bananas for her–we share a love for beachy hair, pants that hit the floor, and dark nail polish.

 The new pieces I got to test out are†Rachel Zoeís ìMajor Must Havesî from Jockey. Rachelís selections include intimates (panties and camisole) and shapewear. As Rachel and I both know–and preach–itís not just about what you wear on the outside; whatís underneath counts just as much.

Because I love Rachel’s style (seriously, can I please be one of her clients?), I was not at all surprised to see how cute the prints on the undies were.


The three pairs above are all very comfortable–the top is a hipster style, the middle a low-cut bikini, and the bottom a thong. †The hipster pair is made from a super-stretchy fabric and features a lilac-colored lace waistband. The other two pairs are a soft cotton featuring pretty geometric prints. †I’ve had a chance to wear them all and love them. †The pair with the lace waistband is particularly flattering. †For those wondering, I take a size medium in all three styles.



Onto the†shapewear. Undergarments are to the body what foundation is to your makeup routine. In the same way you use foundation to create a smooth, even base for the rest of your makeup, shapewear is like a primer for your clothes. †It helps bring out the best in what you wear. †This isn’t to say you should wear it daily, but there are certain ensembles that benefit incredibly from the solid foundation shapewear provides.†


 As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, shapewear can benefit all body types. †Even if you’re thin or don’t have a lot of problem areas, shapewear can make a dress or skirt lay more nicely on the body (especially if you have a dress that’s particularly clingy). †I oftentimes wear a nude-colored slip under some dresses I own, simply because I like the way the fabric falls when I wear it. (Also, a slip has totally saved me from†embarrassment†on a windy day, if you catch my drift.) Shapewear is also a great choice if you do have a problem area or maybe if you’re a new mom and want to smooth things out as you’re shaping back up. †Whatever your body type or concerns, it’s worth a try.

 Jockey’s shapewear line is made with high-quality stretch fabric and super-soft cotton. †It has a patented three-panel design that slims and shapes without causing discomfort. †Personally, my favorite pieces of shapewear are skirt slips and full slips. †Since I wear a lot of dresses and skirts, these styles work best in my wardrobe.

My favorite piece from the line was this full slip, called the Slip Shaper. †It can be worn under dresses, but I have also worn it with a skirt and top.


My favorite part about this slip is that the top is made of the softest, smoothest cotton. †I actually don’t think I would have liked it if the top was the same fabric as the skirt. †I loved that it felt soft on top and not compressing like the bottom part.


The one feature that impressed me most was the silicone band at the bottom of the skirt part that prevents slipping. †It’s meant to keep your shapewear in place. †The one thing that disappointed me a bit about the skirt slip, however, was the length. †I wish it had been 4 or 5 inches longer. However, I realize that they make these pieces for the average woman and not a woman who is 5’10” tall like me. †Despite the fact that I could have used a few extra inches of length, I still enjoyed wearing it, and it smoothed things out and allowed me to wear a skirt that has a more sheer lining. (Seriously, retailers, why make a dark-colored skirt without adequate lining?)

Full slips are most impactful when worn under dresses. You will be amazed at how much your silhouette will shine when you take the extra step to smooth things out before you complete your outfit. It’s like under-eye brightener for your body–it just perks things up.

Next up was this shapewear tank, called the Strappy Tank. †I don’t really gravitate toward tanks for shapewear, but I can say this one is very well made and has the soft cotton at the top for added comfort, just like the full slip. †Once again, I do wish this were longer because I have a super-long torso (seriously, I’m like a giraffe), but if you are of average height it will be a perfect fit. †This tank would be best suited for someone who really wants to refine her midsection. †

Finally, I got to test out the shapewear shorts, called the Tummy Short. I was kind of against shorts for shapewear because I prefer skirt slips, but I guess you shouldn’t knock what you haven’t tried. I quite enjoyed these. †Especially since I tend to carry any extra weight in my hips, thighs and butt, which is exactly the areas these shapewear shorts target. †They can be worn under pants or skirts (or dresses!). †These are made of super-soft, super-stretchy cotton.

    I am intrigued by the slip….I usually avoid the shorts because the roll down on me, but I like the slip idea. There are several times I have needed it….especially in dresses when alcohol is involved. Drinking tendsntonmake me forget to hold my gut in!

    After having my first child, I wear shapewear all the time! No brand has been my favorite as yet – they all pinch/sag or are not very comfortable. I would love to give RZ a try – lover her sense of style and the thoughtfulness she puts into her designs.

    I love that it doesnt slip and I love shapewear for all occasions. Just makes me feel more put together and confident! I wish I would have had some on when I was a bridesmaid in my cousins wedding. the pictures of me in my dress were not that cute!

    These pieces look amazing! Post-baby, I often wish I was wearing shapewear everyday! Sometimes it's just not comfortable but these look practical enough for everyday.

    There's a certain dress I bought that I wish I'd been wearing shapewear when I wore it to work the first time!

    I normally wear a slip or spanx with certain dresses, but it was summer and my current slip doesn't breathe well. When I looked in the mirror at home, everything looked ok so I went without it.

    Under the much brighter lights of my office – you could see just about every flaw in my bottom heavy body, including my panty line (this invisible panty line underwear is apparently only invisible in dim lighting.) Whoops! [email protected]

    I wish I would have worn shape wear under a particular dress I have. It was summer and I didn't want to be bothered with it. I was humiliated when later on, I noticed that I had major panty lines!

    I wish I would have been wearing shape wear for my formal. My dress was jersey so it clung to me everywhere. I didn't really pay attention to where it clung until I looked at pictures afterwards. It clung in all the wrong places!!

    I really enjoyed reading this review.

    I recently tried shape-wear for the FIRST TIME EVER at my photoshoot this past weekend and was SHOCKED how much more comfortable I felt and smoother my mid-section (eep!) looked. I felt better all 'round, and more confident.

    I LOVE how the Jockey ones have the cotton at the top AND bottom of the tank so it would look like a regular tank peeking out, SO smart. No one wants to be exposin' their shape-wear! 😛 LOL.

    I guess I technically can't enter because I'm in Canada, but regardless, great post.

    This is great, I wish I had shapewear for my post baby belly, my everyday clothing of fitted skirts and dresses don't look very flattering anymore 🙁 after having twins, my flat belly is no longer in sight, doing those Jillian Michaels workouts, I'm getting there, slowly but surely

    I, as well as many women out there, have a love hate relationship with shapewear. Initially it looks good but within hours it snags, bunches and usually leaves me in a bathroom stall trying to wiggle my way out of one. Intrigued by Jockey's take though, their undergarments are one of my favorite (cute prints, soft, comfy and most importantly do no disintegrate in the wash).

    I don't have a particular incident where I wished I had been wearing shapewear, but I do have a couple dresses in my closet that I cannot wear because I don't have the proper undergarments (full body slip, long tank). I know these are easily accessible at say, Target or Dillards, but I always seem to not think about that when shopping…

    I wish I had some for my med school interview on Friday! I have to wear a suit and I kind of hate wearing a suit so I'd love to have something hide any bumps so I can focus on dazzling them instead of how my suit fits.

    I wish I would have worn a shapewear slip when I wore my white skirt with jade green panties. I guess I was a little sleepy and didn't realize I was putting the two together! I definitely had to wear my top untucked because it has a little too sheer lining. YIKES!

    I finally started wearing shapewear regularly after I was tagged in a picture on Facebook where I looked 6mos pregnant. Which would have been fine, if I had actually been pregnant at the time…

    So now, I always keep a few different pieces in rotation to go under various outfits. There just comes a point in a woman's life when she discovers her underwear needs more "structure."

    I remember the day I was the matron of honor at my friends' very casual backyard vows. It was a beautiful day, but I felt very self-conscious of how I looked in my clothes. I picked something frumpy and too big because I didn't think I looked good enough for my 'nice' clothes. I should give these shapers a try!

    Thank you for the awesome reviews! I wish I had been wearing a slip/shapewear with a silk dress with a wrap skirt at a friend's wedding in Miami over Memorial Day weekend. I realized I left my camera in my car, so as I walked through the parking lot, a huge gust of wind caught my skirt and blew it wide open for- drumroll please- the bride and her parents – driving up to the reception site – to see! We laughed it off, but I was mortified her dad saw my thong!

    Love the look of these! I was wearing a dress to a wedding that could have used some better shape wear. It was the kind that comes up to the bra line and it kept rolling down creating the look of a nice roll around my gut. That is anti-shapewear! haha

    Now that I am way past bridesmaid dresses and baby excuses – welcome perimenapause – shapewear would have come in handy the last time I wore a tunic/dress over tights – where the dress wanted to stick to the tights = I would have loved the slip shaper to keep the dress from riding up and as a little summ'n to keep my belly tucked in.

    I found the cutest dress to wear for my grad school graduation however now when I look back at the pictures I just think I look pudgy and lumpy, not a good look. Wish I would ahve been wearing shapewear! I try to make sure I wear it under dresses, it just seems necessary.     I would love to win! About a year or so ago I was wearing a Banana Republic wrap dress that I adore at church. I got up in a crowded room to walk to another spot and somehow the buckle at my side had come undone, and my dress flew open. Luckily I grabbed it and closed it immediately, but had I been wearing shapewear I would be a lot more sure that I didn't flash anybody! Thanks!

    I wish I was wearing a tummy tucker on an particular day at office. I was wearing a really tight shirt. When I was in the elevator a fellow associate asked my how many months was I due. It was so embarrassing! I stopped wearing that shirt. Wish I had the shape wear then ?
