This is going to be a completely overly-analytical and borderline-OCD post about my hair…so bear with me.
I mentioned recently on my Facebook page that I haven’t gotten my hair colored or cut since February (yikes!) The truth is, I needed a break. I wanted to just let my hair grow out a bit and get some of my natural color flowing back through.
I was also ready for a change. I realized that I tend to like my hair most as it grows out (with some darker roots showing) and that lately, I had always been unhappy with the placement of my highlights and only liked them again when they grew out and I added more lowlights. In fact, the last three times I had my hair colored, I had to go back every time either to have more lowlights added or to have my color toned.
Some of you might remember what my hair looked like (before I had it fixed) the last time I had it colored (in February). Let’s just be perfectly honest and say it was not good. I’m still not sure what happened, but the highlights just lifted really oddly on me and the placement was incorrect.
After this happened, I had some lowlights added in to give a more blended look and haven’t touched my hair since. Honestly, I was scared. I went from having color that had always looked natural and blended, to this. It looked better after it was fixed but as my hair grew out and the colors toned down, there were times I thought I should just stop coloring it alltogether because I finally liked how it looked again.
Then, I discovered Johnny Ramirez’s blog by seeing his amazing hair colors all over Pinterest and I realized that I wanted someone to try a new technique on my hair to achieve the look I love—which is basically a “softened” version of ombre. Because visuals are important, here are some hair looks I absolutely LOVE—I feel like these looks are blended, NOT high contrast and overall the look I’m going for (obviously my hair is not naturally as dark as some of these examples—but I am referring to overall color placement, tonal qualities and color contrast)
I'm sure your hair will look gorgeous! Can't wait to see how it turns out!
I've gotten ombre done twice and I love it! The first time I was scared (never colored my hair before) so I told the stylist to make it really natural, just sunkissed which she did. But then after a couple of weeks I realized you could barely see it at all, so at my next cut I had her increase it. It's still fairly subtle but I love it so much more now.
Take before and after pictures!!
Oh also- don't be afraid… They will tease your hair like CRAZY!!! It's a bit scary to see if you weren't expecting it!
Best of luck! I would take a before and after picture! It would be cool to see in a couple a months how your hair has changed more to the way you like it. I think the look you are going for is really pretty! I would try it but I am too scared…I had one really bad experience with highlighting and now I don't color my hair at all 🙁
Have a great weekend, V! Can't wait to see your new hair!
I just did this with my hair and I love it!
I hope it goes well! I had to go through many awful colorists before I finally found my current stylists, who does a great job! I'm thinking of seeing if she can turn my way overgrown dark roots and blonde ends into more of an ombre look next time I go in, I think it just needs a bit more in between highlights mixed in to work. Maybe your new color will give me some inspiration!
I am OBSESSED with Johnny Ramirez's work – thanks for the recommendation! I just had balayage highlights added to my hair a couple weeks ago. Unfortunately, I'm not totally in love with it. It probably would've been a better idea if I had brought in a picture of how I wanted my hair to look – looks like you're 10 steps ahead of me on this one. 😉 I hope your hair turns out amazing!
it's so funny you posted this! I've been thinking about doing a subtle ombre as well. An ombre but with highlights and not completely blonde. I think it looks so gorgeous! can't wait to see how yours turned out 🙂
xx
I just switched up my hairstyle and color yesterday, and it feels so good to make a change. Good luck!

Can't wait to see the results. I am just as critical and analytical about my hair when i go for a change… It is such a scary thing, but so amazing if done right!! Cheers:)
Good luck! I just had this done for the second time yesterday. I love it! My husband, however, says I paid $145 to have nothing done.. MEN. Ugh! Lol.
I really love Mila's hair. She is my favorite!!
I stopped coloring my hair in January. I just want my natural color to come back.

I have a pretty drastic ombre in my hair right now but I would love something more subtle. I think it just looks a lot classier. I do think all hair needs some sort of ombre in it just so the two colors give it more depth. I wonder if I can darken my ombre right now but not go all the way back to my natural color. I'll have to go talk to a salon about it.
