Our painting journey has finally come to an end so I decided to break things down and do a post for each room separately. You’ve already seen our main floor (kitchen, dining room and bathroom) and my painted and re-organized closet and today I’m revealing our master bedroom.
This is the room in our house I have the most trouble/frustration with. I don’t spend a lot of time in it (just to sleep, basically) but I still want it to be beautiful. Painting it was a start, but I am not happy with how it looks overall…yet.
I think the walls need something—maybe art, mirrors, floating shelves etc. I also know we need new, larger nightstands. Possibly in white or a fun brighter color. We have some cheapie IKEA ones right now and they are lacking in both function (storage) and style (blah). I also want to switch out the hardware on our dressers.
Nevertheless, though it’s far from being complete, I did want to show how the paint color turned out in our room. It’s the same color we used in my closet and on our accent wall in the living room, Martha Stewart’s “flagstone.”
But before we get into that, let’s take a look at the “before”
I was not into that dark brown color on two of our bedroom walls. I wanted something lighter and I wanted all of the walls painted, not just two of them.
Here is how the paint color turned out:
It’s much crisper now with the new paint color, but like I said, this room still needs a lot of work. If you have any thoughts on what you might add, please let me know in the comments below!
xoxo,
Veronika.
PS: here is a list of the item in our bedroom bedroom:
Bed Frame & Headboard: West Elm
Duvet Cover & Shams- Z Gallerie “Mimosa”
Dressers: IKEA Hemnes
Jewelry boxes- cream- West Elm; blue- Marshalls Home Goods
White tray: West Elm
White Vase: Marshalls Home Goods
Pretty color! What about moving the taller dresser to the space between the windows, and put a mirror where the dresser is now. I think that would help bounce the light around the room. Also larger night stands and funky lamps would be cool.
It's so much brighter now, Veronika! It's funny how something as simple as changing the paint colour can change a room. I agree with you that your walls are looking a little bare… I've always liked personalized wall art like those giant wood or metal letters (you could do your last name initials or something).
xo, alison*elle
I definitely need some kind of art! I love my "LOVE" prints so I might do some of those or other prints and jut do a wall of framed prints…not sure yet but I will figure it out 🙂 thank you for the ideas!
LOL! V- you are NOT going to believe this. I don't know if you remember but I had commented long ago that we had the same duvet from West Elm, but mine was the grey….Well, guess what? I just bought the mimosa print duvet in Turquoise from Z Gallerie. LOL GREAT minds 🙂
I am OFICIALLY declaring us "duvet twinsies!" hehe 🙂
Love the new look!!! Have a great night doll! Kori xoxo

I have been looking for MONTHS for the white box from Marshalls/HomeGoods NO JOKE!!! 🙁 Haven't had any success yet!
Is it possible to move the Tv to another room? It is huge and distracting. Art would be great, what about some pretty book shelves? Tall ones? And maybe a soft chair or chaise lounge?
What does your hubby think of the purple bedding? I wanted to do gray and purple, but my boyfriend thinks it is too feminine…. so gray and yellow it is!
Hi Veronika! I have been enjoying your blog so much! I am a mommy of two little boys and this is my beauty escape! I think the new paint color looks lovely and maybe a pretty sunburst mirror above your bed would compliment the space. I'm sure whatever you decide, it will be beautiful!
Kelly
Andrea- we are TV people so moving it is not something we want to do. I think adding artwork and a mirror and perhaps a sunburst mirror over the bed like someone suggested will be a good start 🙂
I actually like the brown, but it looks great now as well!
I think you are up to a good start. I love the color of the walls and you have beautiful classic furniture. However, I agree it looks a little "blah". Everything is a little matchy matchy right now – gray, white and purple – like the rest of your house. You need color! Your walls desperately need bright colorful artwork.Stay away from more whites, grays and purples and pick colors that provide contrast, but at the same time complement your current color scheme. An easy way to create a richer color palette is by adding some pillows on your bed.
I would also suggest investing in new nightstands and a couple of beautiful statement lamps to go on them.
P.S. I think the sunburst mirror is a little cliche – everybody has one. Do something more unique!
The room looks so much better. I feel like now it sends off a calming vibe…that brown was too "in your face" IMO.
I think some artwork would look great on the walls. Or maybe floating shelfs & artwork (placing the frame on the shelf, similar to your "Keep Calm and Carry On" picture and how it's leaned against the wall).
Best of luck, it looks great!
I think artwork above your bed would look beautiful and you mentioned floating shelves… I think they would look good on the wall in the last picture between the windows.
i never thought grey would be so great as a wall paint. i adore your sense of style 😉
On and also, as I think someone else mentioned, I think larger nightstands with pretty lamps would be lovely.
I think you should find a pretty mirror and hang it in your room and maybe some cool artwork. That would complete it nicely.
Loving the grey tones around the house! I would move the tall dresser to the wall closer to the window (if there is enough room). I love the idea of a starburst mirror over the bed (or any mirror that feels art deco glam). Mabey add some sconces/ lamps attached to the wall on either side of the bed for reading. I would say to put a tall leaning mirror on the wall next to the window if you can't fit the dresser there. I just had a thought.. what about doing a very subtle stencil on the wall behind the TV or bed (a large lattice or damask in the same color but a bit glossier?) I also think a wall of artwork would be nice -some canvas, some framed, etc. Good Luck! Can't wait to see the progress!
I love tht shade of grey…very pretty!
Ooh I agree about some great wall sconces for lighting! That would look so elegant.
I agree with the poster who said that you need to add more contrasting colors rather than continue with the white/purple/gray throughout your entire home. Also, although I love the gray paint color in your other rooms, I'm not such a big fan of it in your bedroom, probably because it's so enclosed as opposed to what seems to be more of an open floorplan throughout the rest of your home. Here's a good tool for picking out some colors that work well together: https://colorschemedesigner.com/
I don't think that you need to have a lot of decoration in your bedroom. I don't know exactly how to explain it, but I think that too much in the bedroom can be kind of…distracting, maybe? I don't know. I just don't think you need to over do it. I think that dressing up nightstands or tops of dressers and maybe one or two small pieces of artwork are more than enough decoration for a bedroom. We've got one simple piece of art that says "Always Kiss Me Goodnight" on the wall right above our headboard, and a full-length mirror on the small section of wall space next to our closet. I dress up the tops of our nightstands and dresser with a few picture frames and a jewelry box and a fake potted orchid and it really brings a lot to the room without being very in-your-face. You really just kind of have to mess around with it and try different things and see what you like best, but I really would suggest not going as all out with decorating as you would in other, more public rooms in your home. Good luck.

The paint color looks great! Maybe you could get those glass bubble lamps for the night tables. Als maybe mount the tv on the wall, it will give you more space on the dresser and it will fill up some wall space too. You definitely need something over the bed, art work or a mirror. Other than that, you can't add much to the walls because there are so many windows and it will look too crowded. Hope this helps!
The color looks great! I would add some floor length drapes for some drama and elegance! Also, maybe a nice, full length mirror propped up against one of the walls. It would be functional and pretty! I have one in my room and I love it! (Not like a cheap, plastic one…LOL)
I think the room looks great!! I think the color definitely brightened it up a lot! I think maybe some art/frame above the bed will look great – I have found great things at homegoods! 🙂 I follow you on youtube and now I am obsessed with your blog!

Your home is beautiful! You are so very blessed!

hey veronika,
i've always been a gray girl so of course i love your color transformation. :]
you could maybe stack 3 framed photos on that bare wall (last photo) next to the long window/door? lainthebay.com is having a giveaway of a print of a chanel no. 5 :]

I obviously need to go to Home Goods more often, you have some amazing scores!! Love the blue jewelry box.
What are the branches that you have in your vase? I am looking for something exactly like that!
I think you're off to a great start, but I think there are some things that could help give the room some oomph! The very first thing I would do is install a light fixture — and install it as low as you can live with it. You've got a sort of romantic feel with the colors, but the high ceiling makes it a little cold. "Lowering" the ceiling with a light fixture would make things more cozy and romantic. It doesn't have to be anything super expensive (something like this from Ikea could even work — https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70089447/).
Next, I would move the tall dresser to the nook between the windows (provided there is enough clearance there).
Then you need some sort of window treatment — even sheers would dress things up (and soften things up, too).
I would also bring in a deeper, more saturated purple — in throw pillows (the two purple that are in front of the white look sort of out of place in terms of proportion) and other accessories.
Then I would replace the knobs on the drawers with something either brighter (they read sort of dull to me) or more interesting or both.
After all of that, I would take a step back and see how and where you want to incorporate art!

Amazing suggestions Sarah 🙂 we are
Actually Doing window treatments throughout the house but we wanted to paint first 🙂
I agree with user who said to add a quote above bed. Mine says "enjoy the small things" in fancy script. Like she said the "always kiss me goodnight one is cute". Also just bought that duvet, but need to get white shams b/c they were out of the mimosa ones. Where are the white textured pillows behind the mimosa sham pillows from???
I love the new paint color Veronika! I have seen great DIY projects done with that Hemnes dresser. You should totally change out the hardware, maybe find some clear glass knobs? Check Anthropolohie, and I believe even Urban Outfitters have cute hardware knobs.
Another cute addition to your room could be the Ikea Billy bookcase. It's a really simple design, but you can dress up the shelves with photos, and funky knick knacks. I've also seen people do neat DIY projects with it, like cover the back board with a fun fabric.
Beautiful! I was inspired by your home so my husband just painted our bedroom revere pewter. Love it! What color is your carpet? Our carpet is beigish light tan and it doesn't really flow well with the gray walls. Also, what is your ceiling lighting in your room? We need to switch out the builder ceiling fan and not sure what I want to put up there.
Quick question. First off love your blog, especially because I think we are due about the same day. I am looking for new dressers for our bedroom. They don't have to be forever dressers, just something to help tie everything together. We kind of ignored our bedroom when we first moved in together and now with baby on the way, I am definitely in nesting mode. So, my question is- do the dressers look inexpensive? I'm not super familiar with ikea stuff and the closest one is a bit of a haul away. Thanks in advance!
LOve! what color is your bedroom painted?
Flagstone by Martha Stewart
The whole look of your bedroom is wonderful. Nice work!
