I immediately thought, “yup, that’s what I’m doing Saturday” which was a surprise to me since I don’t really have any regular volunteer commitments at this time. But the images of famine we’ve all seen on the news lately are enough to motivate anyone to want to help…it’s just devastating to see those kids and families struggling like that.
I think we are all very fortunate to live the lives that we do—to have jobs to go to, a home to live in and food to eat everyday. I don’t want to get too sappy here…but you know what I mean. We are all very lucky.
The organization I worked with is called Helping Hand for Relief and Development, a global humanitarian relief and development organization that responds to human sufferings in emergency and disaster situations around the world. In addition to their emergency relief efforts in natural or man-made disasters, they also work on long term relief and development programs.
We worked for several hours in a warehouse and I was first on oatmeal and granola bar duty and then I helped with other things like water, beans, fruit cups, etc.
After the truck was all packed up, we broke down all of the cardboard boxes so they could be recycled. If you don’t have the time to volunteer on a regular basis, I definitely recommend doing something like this where you can just sign up to help out for a day.
Switching topics now…
After volunteering, I stopped off at Ulta to return my “No More Waity Katie” nail polish (thank goodness I kept the receipt). I ended up exchanging it for Butter London’s “Teddy Girl”
xoxo,
Veronika.
I am loving the Butter nail polishes lately! They really have staying power! My polish is always getting chipped or peeling from my nails in a day or two. Butter stays put for at least a week – with that I can deal easily! I completely agree about volunteering. It is a worthwhile way to spend a Saturday – we are truly blessed to live in the USA.
I have the same polish. It takes a couple of coats to get the right shade but it lasts a super long time!
Good luck with Teddy Girl…it takes 3 coats and still looks streaky 🙁 Hopefully you will have better luck!
It's so awesome that you volunteered your time today. Have a good rest of your weekend!
Sherry,
No offense, but there are people starving here in America. People just don't care, because it does not sound as good as helping people in Africa. Plus, people tend to think that the people here are starving, because of their own doing , or because they are lazy!
can't wait to read your review of "they're real"!!
Hey! Love the blog! Good luck with the Teddy Girl color- like the previous comment I too can't get the color to go on without streaks! It's funny b/c I love Butter London polishes SO much but I am so far not a fan of No More Waity Katie (terrible!) and Teddy Girl 🙁
Check out Yummy Mummy, All Hail the Queen, & Rosie Lee- all AMAZING! FYI- the button london polish remover works great for the glitter polishes too.

@anon— "no offense" but there are people ALL OVER THE WORLD, and yes, including in America who need help. Everyone helps how they would like to. I support charities that benefit American children and families as well. ANY person doing anything to help people who are struggling anywhere in the world is doing something great. Are you suggesting people should also stop adopting internationally because we have children here that need to be adopted? Unfortunately, due to the processes here, it can be very difficult to adopt an American child so a lot of people do go overseas. I think any child who is adopted by a loving family is fortunate—no matter what country they are from. Yes, it's important to help people in our own nation—but what makes America so great is that we are eager to help other nations too. If no one helped Africa ever, it would be even worse there.
Yes – All Hail the Queen is a great color…not streaky at all!
thanks so much for the FYI on the "teddy girl" polish. I usually do 3 coats when I use other brands so I will let you all know how it goes 🙂
I got a sample size of They're real from Sephora and I was not impressed. I am very much like you in the fact that waterproof mascara is the only way. I guess my lashes must be just stick straight, because after I curled them and applied "they're real", they went straight again, but tons of other people have raved about it. I wasn't really a fan of the brush either. I am interested to see what you think of it 🙂
I volunteer on and off for different projects, more people should give it a try. Hats off to you. Don't let the "no offense" comments get in the way.

What a lovely thing you did, Veronika! It shows that you so compassionate and caring — I think you are very admirable! Don't listen to ridiculous comments like "there are people starving in America". I got the same silliness from people when I made my PAWS Charity post, telling me that I should be ashamed of myself for putting the welfare of dogs before children. It's sad when people turn something completely positive into something negative, purely out of hatred and rudeness! Just ignore! 🙂 <3
I picked up that mascara after Tiffany's review. I like it so far!
This is very nice, I like it !

siena—I was born in Slovakia 🙂
I love that you volunteered this weekend! I am a member of my city's Junior League chapter and I positively love it when our community comes together to do something good. One of my favorite projects I participated in was putting together holiday care packages for the cancer center. Keep on doing good!
I am so sad to hear that the mascara didn't work for you! I really wanna try it for the same reason you were intrigued to!
lol "people are starving in America!" You just can't win sometimes, can you?!

Veronika how awesome of you to spend your Saturday helping others!!! And thanks for blogging about it, you have a ton of readers, so maybe it will inspire some of them to get involved.
I still owe you an email about boot camp, I know. I'm going OOT and trying to figure out which schedule I can do.
Love your blog Veronika and well done for the volunteering we need more people like you in this world!!
