Most of you ladies know that I’m not an eyeshadow type of girl for daytime. I do swipe a quick wash of MAC’s “blanc type” all over my lid to even my eyelid skin out, but other than that, I don’t use eyeshadow on the rest of my eyelid area.
I know there are probably some ladies in my boat—you love the look of defined eyes but don’t want to spend the time using 4 different shadows and strategically placing them on your eyelids. I may just have the solution for you!
Something I’ve been doing for the past 2 years or so, is using eyeshadow in a different way: to line my lower lash line. I find it to give a softer, more diffused look to the eyes while still giving beautiful definition.
I prefer using dark or medium gray shadows (like MAC’s “copperplate”) and medium and dark browns (like MAC’s “brun” and “satin taupe”). I use a MAC slanted liner brush to apply the shadow to my lower lash line before applying mascara.
Before I go, I wanted to leave you ladies with some of my wish-list beauty products:
- NARS Laguna bronzer (i’m almost out!)
- MAC Studio Fix Powder Foundation (almost out!)
- MAC studio finish concealer (almost out!)
- Benefit “Life on the A List” lip gloss—one of my favorite beauty gurus, MakeupByAlli sang the praises of this gloss so I must check it out in person
- MAC Fix Plus— I’ve been wanting to try this for awhile now as a makeup setting spray
- Laura Mercier “Lush Nectarine” blush—I saw another one of my favorite (and newly discovered) beauty gurus, pixi2woo rave about this blush so I must check it out in person
- MAC eye shadows in cork, wedge, mystery and woodwinked (all browns, for the lower lash line, of course!)
- Another Bobbi Brown “peony” blush—
I heard from one of my readers that it’s being discontinued—eeep!okay, so maybe it’s not!
- Kerastase hair products— I pretty much want all of them, especially the deep conditioning masks

I talked to a Bobbi Brown consultant at their counter over the weekend- they're not discontinuing Peony- I was misinformed! Which is actually a good thing 🙂 So yay! Also, I tried Kerastase (the orange line and the pink line) and to be honest, I liked the pink line better BUT I found their products to be very, heavy. Even the "lightweight" products just weighed my hair down. No volume, nada. And like you, I love my volume. Give it a try though and see if you can get trial sizes, as their stuff is pricey. GL! (btw this is Glamgirlpsu29 from Formspring)
@cmrpsu—I've used the Kerastase green and pink lines—love the green line a lot!
thanks so much for the comment about the peony blush—thank god it's not being discontinued!
Your eye makeup always looks pretty – you're lucky that you don't need many shadows for your eyes to look nice. Me, on the other hand…..I need the contouring! 😉
mary ann—you are gorgeous! i think i have an eye shape and depth where eye shadow doesn't work as well for me…like I don't have a lot of lid space or something…or my eyes are maybe deeper set and you can't really see the shadow unless I close my eyes! I wish I could learn to do it how I had it on my wedding day!
I haven't tried the green line, is that volumizing? I will have to give it another go!
the green line is volumizing and reparative too—I love their ciment thermique blowdry lotion
I have wanted to try the MAC Fix Plus as well. If you get it I would definetly like to know what you think of it.
I feel so bad, like I gave you an unnecessary panic attack! So sorry about that!
aww don't feel bad! you know me, I just get over dramatic, hehe 🙂 i'm all good!
ok we're cool now 🙂 Let us know about the Benefit gloss and LM blush, I am always up for new favorites..although I am trying to be good until the wedding and not spend too much unless it's something I need.
I always put eyeshadow as a liner under my eyes – I just love the way it looks. I'm not sure if I'd be brave enough to try a bold color like the purple, but I like the way it looks on you.
This is awesome!! I am so not the type who likes all those bright colors and this is perfect!
For some reason, I never like the way I look with my lower lashline lined – but I've never tried lining with powder…next time I'm playing around, I'll have to try it!
I swear by using a highlight colour in my inner eye (like Stila's kitten) – it really suits my eye shape and makes my eyes look bigger and brighter!
On my wishlist: good foundation (maybe EL doublewear or Revlon colourstay) and Chanel nailpolish – maybe in Jade Rose if I can still find it!
I love how your lower lash line looks! I've been smoking out my gel eyeliner (Blacktrack) out lately with the MAC 219 and then what residual liner is left on the 219, I'll swipe it over my lower lashline before mascara. Looks nice and smoky and gives good definition. Totally gonna try the brown eyeshadow with an angled brush. Like the above commenter said, you ARE lucky you don't really need eyeshadow. I have such big eyes and a lot of eyelid (I've been told I have Anime eyes) so I need eyeshadow for contouring.
As far as desires, I wanna try the MAC Mineralize skin finish! I want the Bobbi Brown creamy concealer, too! I'm curious to hear what you think about the Benefit gloss! I don't know how I feel about Fix Plus. I don't understand setting sprays unless it's for stage makeup, but I'm curious to hear your opinion. –Meg
I too use eyeshadow as a liner on my lower lashes and agree that it lasts all day and gives a great soft look. I also use black on top and brown on bottom for liner.
I'm a huge eyeshadow girl, my eyes are giant and i have a lot of lid so it works for me. I have MAC woodwinked and it's one of my FAVORITE shadows! That and romp are my top too deep bronzes/browns, they're definitely must haves for any makeup bag.
you are so pretty veronika, i just loveee the purple under the eye.
xoxo monika.
What a cool trick, Veronika! Thanks for sharing–it looks so pretty on you!
My current desires is finding a perfect light coral hue for mah lips. I picked up Chanel's rouge coco in egerie yesterday and it's a BEAUTIFUL bold coral perfect for summer, but I want something a bit more muted and sweet for spring! *wiggles*
LOVE this tip. Your eyes look amazing and wow they look awesome in the purple too!
I love woodwinked and mystery and highly recommend them! Thank you for posting this – I'm going to do this tonight!
hey Veronika! I've always wanted to wear eyeshadow under my eyes, but every time I tried, it always looked weird. I appreciate your tutorial, it looks amazing on you and I'm going to have to give it another whirl!
I also just saw your hospital post. I'm so glad you're okay and recovering alright. That's a tricky thing to go through, and your hubs was so sweet to take care of you and get you those earrings.
My beauty wishlist is for some MAC studio finish concealor and the MAC kubuki brush so that I can use when applying the mineralized skin finish natural (which I'm loving, btw!). I do have the 150 brush but I feel like I'll be able to blend it better with a kubuki. I also want Satin Taupe eyeshadow, I hear it's great to wear alone!
Love this!!! I think the shadow on the lower line is a great technique…must try this tonight. OH and I love your eyebrows too! 🙂
Your eyes look great. I do this sometimes too…but mine doesnt quite stay put as well;(
I can totally vouch for Kerastase! I use the black mask (caviar treatment) but I also alternate between the pink line and the orange/yellowish line.
My hair has never been in better shape. Its money well spent!
Hey Veronika !
Love the purple eyeshadow under the eye, what color is it ?
