I’ve never done a “fitting room try-on” post, but I think I’ll do these more often because I think they are fun! Gigi from Gigi’s Gone Shopping does these posts all of the time. It’s a nice way to see how things fit on other people.
Model’s clothes are clipped, snipped and pulled in all kinds of ways when they are shooting for catalogs, and sometimes you don’t get a realistic perspective of how the clothing item actually looks when it’s on (as a side note, isn’t it so annoying when a top looks form-fitting in the catalog and then when you try it on it is totally loose, even in an XS? I hate that, why didn’t they just make the shirt more tailored, the way it looks in the catalog?)
Anywho. I wanted to check out the Jean Paul Gaultier for Target line before it all sells out, and I am so glad I went today because I was able to score the most gorgeous dress.
First though, I’ll show you the dress that was a “miss.” I so wanted it to fit and love it, but it just wasn’t happening. The color is gorgeous though. I tried this on in a 7, because that’s all that was left remotely close to a size that would fit- the others were 1’s and 13’s. I would have needed a size 5 in this style. Looking at these pics makes me realize how pale I am, and yes those are flip flop tan lines on my feet left over from our honeymoon. And yes, my hair is uber messy and dirty!
This is the Jean Paul Gaultier for Target® Halter Dress – Spanish Mustard.
I didn’t see all of the stock I saw online in the actual store (some pieces weren’t there at all, I’m sure stores get different stock.) This dress was cute, but it was too poufy (even for me.) It had tulle underneath. It was too big on me anyways, so it just looked that much pouffier. The fabric was interesting, like plasticy almost, but NOT in a bad way. Good in concept, not so good on me. Here is the back and a closer-up shot:
I was sad to not get this dress, but it just didn’t work. I felt like a cupcake. I love cupcakes, I just don’t want to look like one. (mmm cupcakessss)
But then…(oh that sweet moment!) I tried on this amazing black dress (in a size 9! GASP!!!) The JPG for Target sizes are way off. I typically wear no larger than a size 4 in dresses and the 9 fits me well. The size 9 is a little looser in my tummy area, but the hips and the rest of the dress fits like a glove. I honestly don’t even know if the size 7 would have worked. I have larger hips so I need to find dresses that will accommodate them.
Gosh this dress is gorgeous. The print, the texture, the fabric, the shape, the embellishments. Oh I love it so. Plusalso, it’s totally an awesome length on me. It is SO difficult for me to find a LBD that isn’t too short on me. I can see myself wearing this for a night on the town, to a special dinner, to a wedding. It’s very versatile.
It’s the Jean Paul Gaultier for Target® Strapless Cloque Dress – Black.
This was taken before my lovely bestie kindly zipped the dress up for me (the zipper in the back is so cute too!)
Have you tried on any of the JPG for Target pieces? Are you going to check out the line soon? I am looking forward to seeing pieces from the Liberty of London line at Target. I saw some LofL picture frames at my Target, but that’s all. I thought there was more home decor and clothing, but maybe it just hasn’t come out yet.
xoxo,
Veronika.
LOVE that black dress, you're right–it's perfect on you!
Very cute! I agree with the mustard dress – not so flattering. But the black one is super cute! I'll have to go to Target and check it all out!
thanks ladies! stacy- the yellow dress was so NOT flattering, you're so right! I did love it on the hanger though!
Ha, did you see my post? That dress is the one I want! I think…I need to try it on first, hopefully tomorrow!
beautygirl- i just posted to your blog 🙂
It just sold out online Veronika! Wow, it went so fast! Hopefully it's still available in stores. You look absolutely stunning in it, you really do =)
thank you 🙂 i think when I wear the proper undergarments and a great pair of heels, it will be a super awesome dress!
Hey Veronika! I really like the dressing room post. I noticed a dress with tulle underneath from Target and quickly moved on! I just can't imagine tulle underneath anything other than a wedding gown. How much did you pay for the black dress? I think it looks classic and perfect on you!
I ordered a few JPG pieces this morning, including the mustard dress! After seeing your post, I'm not confident it will work at all but I think cutting the tulle out will make a big difference. It does look sort of long on you and I'm only 5'2" so, again, not hopeful.
Liberty of London comes out on the 14th. I'm looking forward to it as well, such cute, girly, playful stuff!
ashley- I am 5'10 and it was long on me. I think without the tulle it could be cute. I kind of pushed it down a bit with my hands to see how it would look with less pouff and it was cuter without the pouff.
I can't wait for LOL! I wonder if there are preview pics online? I am going to Google!
anon- it cost $59.99 🙂
i should clarify that the underneath wasn't really tulle…it was like what's under wedding gowns…crinoline? (sp)
The black dress looks incredible on you. I think it's neat Target offers things of that quality now. The mustard dress is a great color, and I don't think the fit is bad, it's just a little teeny-bopperish to me. Even in the summer I think it would be better suited on someone 18 rather than 27, IMO.
cassie- you are so right…I have to try and be more careful these days with dressing my age. I think i can still pull off some younger looks, but pouffy dresses with crinoline might not be a good look for me.
The mustard dress completely overwhelms you. The black dress is classic and beautiful. Great choice, and you can't beat that price!
I love this post! 🙂 As others have said, the black dress fits you like a glove.. too bad the yellow dress has the tulle underneath, because I think it would be a lot more flattering minus the "poofiness".. great finds! 😀
olivea- I know right? the more and more I look at the pics the more I see just how huge the skirt of the dress is. It's just so…fluffy!
The 2 dresses you tried on are my favorites out of his collection, but otherwise I wasn't too impressed.
http://www.fashiontherapist.blogspot.com
fashion therapist- I agree, the rest of the collection didn't really appeal to me. I am really looking forward to the pretty florals in the Liberty of London collection. I am totally going to go right when it comes out next Sunday the 14th!
Tell me you got the black one!! Too cute! No, Gorgeous! I'm definitely making a target run tomorrow!
Thanks for the link love! I tried on a few pieces. Some are very well done. I think JPG nails the fit on dresses. The fabrics are substantial on almost all of the pieces. Definitely one of the higher quality lines. But fit. They need to stop it with people needing a 9 instead of a 5 or 7. I can't say I've seen any teenagers in any of the lines they've had at Target. Maybe I just don't socialize with enough. I do know that today's teenagers have more shape than some of these lines account for.
The black dress looks awesome on you!
I hate the way they do that with clothes too, the pulling and pinning for the models. J Crew is REALLY bad at that!
Love that black dress, but can you please erase the word "bestie" from your vocabulary? I mean come on now… we're adults.
anon- I like the term "bestie." If you don't like it, you can use a different word to describe your best friend on your own blog or in your own conversations 🙂
I really dig that black dress…it looks fab on you but oh my if you wear a 9 I'll probably need a 30…wonder if it comes in plus sizes lol
Great finds. I will surely check out this line now
PS I always say bestie
The black dress looks awesome on you! I've had my eye on the yellow dress (online they show it with a tattoo print shirt) but I'm glad you tried it on. If you feel/look like a cupcake, I will look like a huge bunt cake. Great find! Thanks for sharing your pics! 🙂
That black dress is great, but it is a bit insulting to GASP at a size 9. Size 9 is not big, by any means, especially when it comes to junior sizes. So to Gasp at it, is a bit insulting to women who are larger than that size. Just an FYI.
Anon- to clarify, I was not gasping at a size 9 dress in general, I was surprised at the fact that I had to wear a size 9 dress when I'm typically a much smaller size. I understand these are juniors sizes, but they do not look or fit, IMO like juniors sizes at all. They look like women's sizes (like if you held up a size medium shirt in women's to one of the shirts in the line in a medium, they would be the same size. There is nothing wrong with being any size if you are healthy. I wrote an entry about that in a previous blog if you'd like to check it out: https://veronabrit.blogspot.com/2009/10/finally-magazine-that-gets-it.html
I like the mustard dress, but I don't think I could ever get away with wearing that color.
Love that black dress!
Btw, you've created a monster. 🙂 A few months ago, I had no ruffles or rosettes or bows in my wardrobe. My style was pretty basic: dress shirts or plain white tanks under plain sweaters offset with some statement jewelry. Ultra feminine pieces just weren't me but some of your posts have inspired me. Now it seems practically everything I own has some sort of embellishment. lol
I bought a super cute light pink pencil skirt with adorable ruffles from Target just the other day. I thought of you! It's from the Merona line though and only comes in sm, med & lg. I bought the med [typically wear a 6].
Neon [from thenest]
Neon- I have that skirt! was it $16.99?
it was – and it's super cute on – I totally thought of you when I bought it!
