Affordable-chic clothing and accessories retailer Forever 21 recently launched a cosmetics line called “Love & Beauty” by Forever 21.
The line features eye pencils, eye shadows, lips glosses, nail polish and more…
Beauty confession: I am a total beauty snob. I like the higher end lines and products. That said, I love a drugstore mascara as much as the next girl, but 90% of my cosmetics are from MAC or Sephora (I can’t say the same for hair products though- I’ll try anything!)
Drugstore products have come a long way. Many products that can be found at your local CVS or Walgreens are now on par with some of the offerings of higher-end brands. Formulas are long-lasting, highly-pigmented and come in a variety of shades and colors. Plus, you can’t beat the price ($6 for three eye shadows that can create an entire eye look, is a lot more budget-friendly than one $14 eye shadow from MAC.)
I guess I just think that Forever 21 should probably stick to what they know best- trendy, low-priced clothing and accessories. When it comes to makeup and skin care products, I tend to think that price is a reflection of the quality of the formula. I have fairly sensitive skin, so I have to be careful.
Forever 21’s cosmetics line may appeal to some of their younger customers, like pre-teens, but I can’t imagine someone my age, or older being interested in their line. Now, I’m not one to judge a product before trying it- but I won’t be trying their products at all. I’d rather save my $6 for a L’oreal or Cover Girl mascara than chance it on a Forever 21 eye liner.
There are plenty of lower-cost lines like NYX, N.Y.C. and Milani that make great products, but I find that only some of the products are great, and others are more “you get what you pay for” kind of products.
Will you try any of the makeup from Forever 21’s new line? Stephie from “Superficial Obession” wrote a blog recently all about her drugstore faves…go check hers out, and then tell me about your can’t-live-without-em’ drugstore faves. Please share them in the comments below.
Also, for anyone interested, here is my Outfit of the Day:

I'm not interested to be honest. My list of "must try" products is ever growing and most of the items on it are Sephora / Department store lines. I've gotten really lucky with drugstore makeup lately and I'm loyal to certain products but those brands are established. It takes me a while to warm up to new brands, I recently bought the warm palette from Coastal Scents but it took me FOREVER to decide if I should take the plunge or not as I'd never seen it in person.
Great dress BTW, I love that high waisted look.
I'm with you on the higher end make-up. My skin is fairly sensitive as well, and I would rather stick to clinique or MAC knowing that they specialize in make-up and skincare! Forever 21 is great for cheap accesories and clothing – and will be interesting to see if they do well with their new line. 🙂
I'll try almost any cosmetic.. seriously. Most of my daily items are higher-end, and my drugstore purchases are usually 'for fun' just to play with and try. I love loving a $5 product as much as the next girlie girl, but I don't think I'll be trying the F21 line (maybe a gloss?). They should stick to the (whorish) hair accessories (I'm bringing it back :)) and cutesy/trendy/basic pieces that they are so good at.
While I am always interested in trying new things, I think the only product I would try is a lip gloss…as you mentioned, if I were 15, I think the cosmetics line would be more appealing!
"I just think that Forever 21 should probably stick to what they know best- trendy, low-priced clothing and accessories."
This exactly. I'm just starting (at 26) to get into make up (which my mom, a pro MUA, is thrilled), but I also assume with most things price is a reflection of quality. I'd rather make investments in quality products then buy multiple cheapies…
Um, no thank you F21! All of my makeup is either MAC or Maybelline- I just love their mascara!
I agree I def will not be trying the makeup line!! Ill stick to the cute tops and minidresses 😉
I am sort of odd, I really love makeup that smells good. I can't stand that plastic-ey smell. I really love Covergirl powder products, and Maybelline Moisture Extreme Lipcolor (the best smelling lip product I've ever encountered) But I totally agree, you get what you pay for when it comes to makeup. Most of the Forever21 products look a little…wackadoo for me. I don't think I'll be partaking.
